Everyone has different fitness goals when they step into a gym. Some people want to get larger, some people want to get smaller, and some people just want to change their body composition a bit. You may be looking to slim down, or put on some muscle mass, or to increase your stamina and athletic performance, and maybe you just want to feel a little healthier and do something that’s good for your body and long-term health.
Whatever your motivation is, here are some general fitness tips for teens to keep in mind.
Having a healthy mindset is one of the most important aspects of this whole endeavor. A healthy mindset means having realistic goals and expectations, doing things for the right reasons, and not being too hard on yourself. It takes discipline to succeed in fitness, but that doesn’t mean that you need to make yourself miserable or feel terribly stressed and guilty about it. You’ve got a long life ahead of you, and even longer if you take care to exercise, so don’t worry if you miss a few workouts, get injured and have to take a break to heal properly, etc.
2. Setting Realistic Goals
It’s easy to say you want to gain 20 pounds of muscle in the next 6 months and you’ll accomplish it by lifting for 6 hours every day. When push comes to shove, you should set realistic goals both in terms of the daily grind, and the long-term results you’re chasing.
In other words, it’s important to push yourself, but make sure you’re reaching for something that’s even possible.
The night before, when you’re full and ready to go to bed, it’s easy to say you’ll eat X amount of calories the next day to try to lose weight, or that you’ll lose 15 pounds in the next month, but that’s not always healthy. It’s about the long-term marathon here, not a short-term sprint. Shave off a few calories each day and you’ll be much better off than trying to eat nothing for a few days and finally having to play catch-up when you’re feeling sick and faint.
1. Use Resources
The internet has become a great way for people to share fitness tips and advice. There are a lot of people who are trying to sell you all sorts of products and programs, some are more legit than others. Take advantage of resources like videos with advice on training, how to eat and workout safely, and so on.
With so many great resources available, it’s a huge shame not to take advantage of them!
